We’ve all heard models say that drinking water is their secret to flawless skin. It’s not so much a secret, as it is common knowledge at this point. But it sounds almost too simple and too good to be true. So… I don’t actually need to spend a fortune on skin treatments to get clear skin?! And how on earth am I supposed to carry so much water around with me anyways?
Honestly speaking, I can’t help but see the similarities between people who drink a lot of water; their skin is always glowing, it’s complexion is clear and even, not to mention they have literally NO PORES or whiteheads. It’s everything I want my skin to be!
Starting the Skin Care Challenge:
So after finally having enough of my bad skin and acne. I decided I wasn’t going to sit around, feel bad about my skin and do nothing. So when I finally started my Skin Care Challenge — The very first thing I was going to do was start drinking more water. Why? Because it’s simple, cheap, and easy to do.
I don’t normally drink more than 4 glasses of water a day (at best), so I set out to drink anywhere between 8-10 glasses of water a day. I wasn’t expecting any crazy miracles but I really didn’t expect to see such a massive difference in my skin at the end of the week. Here’s what happened:
Day 1: At the end of the day, I didn’t notice any difference in my skin.
What I did notice was how hard it was to keep track of the amount of water I was drinking and keeping it spaced throughout the day. The rest of my evening was spent chugging water out of a measuring cup to make sure I hit 4-5 extra glasses of water.
Day 2: Still no difference, but I was no quitter!!
I got a little bored with drinking plain water so I tried jazzing it up with fruit infused water the night before. I loved the idea of the added nutrients and benefits, but in all honesty — it’s just not practical for me during the hectic work week to take the extra time to cut up fruits in so many mason jars. Plus I learned leaving citrus with skin in there for too long makes the water bitter (yuck).
Day 3: I felt like my skin was starting to look a little bit better. It was more supple, and the dark shadows and discoloration looked like they were fading away.
Also, I ditched the old school sticky notes (yes I was tallying) and embraced technology, and downloaded the Hydro Coach: a savvy water tracking app. It calculates the amount of water you should be drinking according to YOUR body and lifestyle and spaces out your water intake throughout the day. It also shoots you reminders whenever you are lagging behind in your water intake.
Talk about life saver! I loved being able to see exactly how much water I was drinking and it helped me hit all my targets. In fact, I ended up drinking closer to 10 glasses of water since I started using the app.
Day 4: Yep my skin was definitely more clearer — I was not imagining it!
I also realized how much more water my body needs then I had thought. I was so used to drinking water that I felt extremely thirsty and dehydrated if I went for a long period without drinking any.
Day 5/6: Yep, drinking water is totally my thing — and my skin loves it. I’m ecstatic to see how the next few weeks will affect my skin.
Day 7: My skin looked like it was glowing and I wasn’t getting any large breakouts. On a practical note, it obviously didn’t clear everything up — my acne scarring is still very much there which is to be expected. But my skin is only going to get better if I keep this up!
I’m almost 4 weeks in now and my skin is definitely improving. This short challenge has really made me realize that clear skin must be an INSIDE job. This means I have to focus more on what I eat and drink — and make sure the things I am putting in my body are benefiting my body and ultimately my skin.
